Wrong Side

I'm a captain you're a pirate
I’m a stewardess you're the high-jacker

you're the man I’m the child
back and fourth the nights swings

on the wrong side of history
waking up as anybody
the legacies of centuries
mix in our dreams

my parents were hippies I joined the police
growing up atheist now I believe
the distance of a lifeline stretched around my time
runs one-hundred eighty degrees

I live for feelings I remain mute
communicating with an instrument carved from wood

falling for people I become allergic to
yearning for what makes me hurt

I didn’t want children so I teach them instead
looking out into a darkness holding onto threads
I keep looking for the same thing in other people
nothing I want ever makes sense
